College Student Resume and Cover Letter

You finally graduated!  Being a student was a long and bumpy road, and now you’re ready to find your dream job.  You’re about to begin the career for which you and/or your parents spent all that money.  So, what’s the next step?

First, you must have a professional resume and cover letter.  But this is real life and there is no help, is there?  Relax and read on.  Help is at hand.

We take great interest in helping students compose their university or college resume.  This is a new graduate’s opportunity to prove to the world his or her worth, enthusiasm, and knowledge.  We offer a special resume and cover writing service for “newbies” to salute your accomplishment.

You will need a dynamic, interview-winning resume and cover letter that will grab the recipient’s attention and encourage him or her to read further.  We have prepared many of these marketing documents for graduates, and they are tailor-made for your field of expertise.  The cover letter needs to show your personality, so we write the letter as if you were talking to the reader.  We show the reader what kind of employee you will be, and this is why our documents get attention.

Even when you are successful in getting an interview, all the work you have done preparing and distributing your resume can be for nothing.  It can all be lost in 20 minutes if you are not properly prepared for the interview.  Some questions can be brutal.  We conduct mock interviews with job seekers, asking many of the standard questions often asked of students and recent graduates. This is an eye opener for most job seekers.  Many clients have asked us, “They aren’t really going to ask me that, are they?”  However, 95% of the time, potential employers do ask difficult or challenging questions.

A question that is often asked in job interviews is, “Why do you want to work in this industry and in this position?”

At this point, your interview preparation and research (or lack of it) will become apparent.  You must give one or two reasons why you’re interested in the industry or company and what specifically piqued your interest in the job. Be prepared to relate the most exciting personal experience you have had with the company, its services, its products, its company reputation, and your reason for wanting the job itself.  The interviewer is looking for something that proves that you really know about the company and the job.

For example, people who are pursuing police work often respond, “I truly enjoy helping people; it is so rewarding.”  This is about the worst response a candidate can give, and it indicates a total misunderstanding of police work. It is imperative that you let the interviewer know that you understand both the positive and negative aspects of the position. A police officer deals with a lot of people, but these encounters are not all rewarding.  There are extremely difficult times, and the interviewer wants to know that you are aware of this.

A better answer would be, “I have spent a lot of time thinking about my goals, researching, and determining what I am good at, and what I really want out of my career.  I have decided that this industry and this profession would be best.  I understand that being a police officer is not glamorous and that there will be difficult situations and danger that I will have to deal with each day, as well as opportunities to help others, but I feel confident and eager to take on the responsibility of being a good officer.”

This response shows that the job seeker has done some serious planning, has narrowed his or her focus, and has a clear picture of the pros and cons to the job.  The answer shows an understanding of the importance of personal career planning, demonstrates an ability to make careful, well thought-out decisions, and indicates a realistic approach to the job itself.
