Using Recruiters to Get your Next PositionFirst, you need to gain an interview with the recruiter, then you need them to refer you to the position you desire. If the recruiter has a client in the market for someone with your credentials, and if your resume is solid, powerful, and shows value - you may receive a call. If you appear too desperate, recruiters may not recommend you to their clients. You will generate more interest if you are seen to be exploring attractive, alternative career opportunities, than if you are seen to be unhappy with your present employment. If you are deemed highly marketable, recruiters may want to send your credentials to a number of employers under their letterhead. This may not be in your best interest, because you may want to contact the employers directly yourself. In most cases, you should initiate contact with recruiters at the start of your job search. Timing is important, and luck can play a big part. The chances of a recruiter having an assignment for your background may be slim, so don't be surprised if you are not contacted immediately, but rather a few months down the road. The best advice is to get to know many recruiters before you need them - be proactive. By establishing a positive rapport with recruiters, you will gain and maintain a high profile in your career field. Join the Cando Career Connection Newsletter.
